Sonia's Fab Recovery

Fab Living story

Every day an estimated 1.2 million Australians endure osteoporosis and its varying levels of pain and inconvenience.  Low bone density is common to a further 6.3 million.  Chances are, if you’re not afflicted or at risk, someone close to you is.

One morning 12 years ago Aqualink group fitness member Sonia Paulett, now 75, couldn’t put her foot on the ground when rising out of bed.  Little wonder, for it was found she’d incurred a stress fracture caused by this condition which renders bones thinner and more fragile.

As is often the case with osteoporosis, it took a break to reach Sonia's diagnosis.  Fortunately, it wasn’t too late to commit to her doctor’s prescription of regular weight bearing exercise, coupled with medication.

After fast finding a private gym unsuitable, the decade-long Aqualink regular relishes the training and camaraderie of the popular over 60’s ‘Fab Living’ group fitness classes at Nunawading.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the trainers (Debbie, Helen and Carolyn) and sincerely thank them for all their dedication and direction over the years,” Sonia reflects.

Her own dedication over the journey led to some remarkable news in January. A dexascan showed Sonia’s bone density to be normal.

“My doctor said she doesn't often see such a result, and although medication has obviously done its job, it needed to be assisted by exercise to achieve this outcome.”

Sonia attributes her improved condition ‘hugely’ to physical training and recommends others her age or managing health issues to ‘just give it a go.’

Whilst trainers do take age into consideration, Fab Living participants are extended as far as is possible and safe.  Regular professional development engenders confidence in the instructors and the exercises employed in classes which encompass weight-bearing, cardio, balance and stretching.

Such is the importance of kick starting her day with the 8am sessions, when Sonia moved house five years ago, staying within reach of Aqualink Nunawading was a key consideration.

“Aqualink Nunawading is a major part of my life and my wellbeing. Most days we chat over a coffee in the cafe after class and have developed friendships which extend beyond the gym - to outings and even to holidays together,” enthuses Sonia. “We are from all walks of life but all at a similar stage of life.”

Like most regulars, Sonia’s not without her pet training hates, citing ‘beesits’ and planks as two exercises that aren’t so fab.

But she pushes through, no doubt inspiring all those around her.
