Meet Flynn Phillips - Swimmer - Student - Lifeguard - Customer Service

How long have you worked at Aqualink?

I have worked at Aqualink for five years. At 16, I started lifeguarding at Box Hill. A few years later, I became a Customer Service Officer and now work across both centres.

Starting work at such a young age was made easy by the flexible hours and weekend shifts. I could work while still at High School, and as a casual employee, I could take some time off to focus on exams at the end of Year 12. The flexibility is great as it allows me to fit work into my busy schedule.

What do you do?

Apart from working at Aqualink, I am a competitive swimmer with Surrey Park Swimming Club. I train nine times weekly, including sessions in the Aqualink Box Hill Outdoor pool. The Swimming Club has a gym located at Aqualink Box Hill, so we also do gym sessions there.

I grew up swimming at Surrey Park and have been around the pool since childhood. I remember swimming in the old outdoor pool before the redevelopment of Aqualink Box Hill. We trained under a tent during construction.

Winter or summer?

Definitely summer. I spend all winter wishing it was summer!

Mountains or beach?

The beach is one of my favourite places. If I have time off training over summer, you will almost always find me down at the beach, especially a beach with plenty of waves.

Who's your favourite sports team?

Western Bulldogs

What's the worst fashion item you've owned?

My current pair of TNs. I love them, but everyone else hates them!

What's one song or artist that you're embarrassed to admit you like?

Taylor Swift – but don't tell anyone!

What's one thing you wish you were good at but aren't?

Golf – my mates beat me every time

What's your most hated task?

Cooking (but I love eating). I would eat straight out of the pantry if I could.

Favourite food?

Definitely chicken parma's

What is your favourite swim stroke?

Freestyle, I am a distance freestyler (both pool and open water), so I spend way too much time swimming freestyle.

Salt N Vinegar or Chicken chips

Definitely Chicken. Why would you put vinegar on a chip?

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I used to sell footy records at the MCG with my loudest voice, "Getcha footy records, $5!".

Are you currently studying?

I've just finished my third year studying for a double degree in Engineering and Science at Monash University.
