Kate has been an Aqualink member for nearly 20 years. What started as a solo fitness journey has grown into something much bigger; friendships, community, and a body she's stronger in than ever. Here's her story, in her own words.
"For as long as I can remember, I have been a self-confessed gym junkie and exercise enthusiast. As a proud and passionate member of Aqualink for nearly 20 years, I first found my rhythm swimming laps, lifting weights, and unwinding in the spa after long days working at a desk. The convenience, variety of classes, and welcoming atmosphere made Aqualink Nunawading my second home.
For many years, I tended to train solo—disciplined, consistent, and focused. That all changed when a close friend invited me to try a water aerobics class. What started as a simple “yes” quickly became a new chapter. Hooked from the start, I embraced the energy of group fitness and discovered something unexpected: a vibrant community of intelligent, inspiring people of all ages who would become valued friends.
With an admittedly obsessive streak (the healthy kind!), I threw myself into water aerobics, attending classes most evenings and weekends. Even after retiring a few years ago, my commitment to movement never wavered—only the schedule shifted to a more flexible morning routine.
Despite years of dedicated training, long hours at a desk had taken their toll, leading to ongoing back pain. Water aerobics and gym work provided relief for over 15 years, but in early 2024 I took on a new challenge: Pilates. The first class was both exciting and humbling—a surprising realization of just how much core strength I lacked. Yet what kept me coming back was the immediate sense of relief and strength I felt afterward. Class by class, my back pain eased, my posture improved, and amazingly my body transformed. Today, Pilates, Body Balance, and gym sessions form the foundation of my daily life and routine, delivering the greatest positive impact on my strength, mobility, and overall wellbeing.
Beyond the gym floor, I’m also a passionate community connector. Twice a year, a fellow Aqualink member (Libby) and I organise a lively members’ lunch at the Burvale Hotel, regularly bringing together 40 to 50 Aqualink members from diverse cultures and backgrounds for connection, laughter, and friendship.
In my spare time, I visit my ageing mum in care and co-run a popular one-bedroom suite BnB from our home in Mitcham with my husband, Aldo. Hosting guests from local areas, interstate, and around the world has become another rewarding way to connect with people and share warmth and hospitality.
Fitness may have started as a personal passion, but it has evolved into something much greater—a lifestyle built on strength, resilience, community, and connection."
