A Major Investment in Our City’s Future
Aqualink Box Hill (AQBH), including the indoor aquatic and recreation centre, three-court multipurpose indoor sports stadium and Surrey Dive, has served the community well for decades. However, AQBH is no longer adequate to meet the needs of the 650,000 patrons who visit the centre each year and Surrey Dive requires essential works to the embankment and upgrading of the pedestrian facilities.
Whitehorse City Council is currently investing $30+ million, including a $2.5 million contribution from the Victorian Government through Sport and Recreation Victoria, to transform AQBH into a modern, high quality facility, with greatly improved accessibility and an expanded range of aquatic and leisure opportunities for the Whitehorse community.
The project comprises three main components:
- restoration works on the historic Surrey Dive area
- major refurbishment of the indoor multipurpose sports stadium
- complete redevelopment of the AQBH aquatic and leisure centre.
Throughout the construction period of AQBH between February 2012 and December 2013, some aquatic and land activities will continue to operate at the facility, and all other recreation facilities at Surrey Park will remain open to the public.
Key Features of the New Aqualink Box Hill
Whether you want to experience the fun and excitement of the new indoor water-play spaces, swim for fun, fitness or competition in the expanded aquatic areas, relax in the warm water pool or enjoy working out on the latest equipment in the new huge gymnasium and group fitness areas, the new Aqualink Box Hill will have something for everyone.
Features of the new Aqualink Box Hill facility include:
- 700m2 gymnasium (double the size of the former gymnasium) overlooking Surrey Park and the indoor pool hall with the latest in exercise equipment
- expanded group fitness zones including a health and wellness area for yoga, pilates and gentle exercise classes, spin room, personal training studio and a larger multipurpose group fitness room allowing greater programming flexibility
- new warm water pool co-located with upgraded spa and sauna facilities
- new outdoor 10-lane, 25-metre pool with terraced seating
- family-friendly water-play areas including splash pad with large tipping bucket, water sprays, small slides, water rainbows, bubblers and geysers
- new toddler and leisure pool with beach entry
- expanded learn-to-swim pool with ramp access providing additional teaching space for aquatic education programs
- expanded crèche facility with toilets, kitchen and outdoor play area with capacity for 30 children
- expanded customer reception and retail zone, including a new cafe with dual servery providing for wet and dry area eating
- enhanced disability access with a new ramp to the indoor pool, ramp to the outdoor pool and a lift to the second level dry fitness area
- environmentally-sustainable design features including maximising natural air and daylight into program spaces, double-glazing, solar hot water supply, grey-water recycling and rainwater harvesting
- 76 additional car parking spaces.
